Communities

The first theme of the year has come to an end and the kids really loved this one. We studied communities during the first six weeks of school. Throughout the unit students worked on building a community of their own. We included an urban, rural, and suburban community. Students brought in boxes of all sizes which we covered with construction paper. Then we glued down the buildings, trees, streets, and rivers. This was a great project for integrating reading, writing, and math with our social studies curriculum. We were able to read many non-fiction books on communities, students wrote a personal narrative about their role in make the community, and they measured the boxes and construction paper for the buildings.
